Yes it's quite a shock, even when copying a really old and dirty analog tape to regular 16-bit audio, a lot of detail is lost.

You can use a compressor/expander to "push" up the lower db signals to a slightly louder one, thereby giving off the impression of increased sensitivity/dynamic range. Of course, you can also end up amplify some background hiss and noise so just feel your way around the settings for the optimal output.

If you do audio editing on your PC, high-end software such as SoundForge or CoolEdit should have the compressor/expander function.
