I dont know if anyone has answered your question. But i feel that speaker wire would not be appropriate for your needs as xlr cables for studio use need to be balanced so as not to produce hum on the recordings, this means that all three pins on the xlr need to be connected you are also better using a good quality microphone cable becouse they are generally better sheilded than speaker cable and are less likely to pick up any rf interference. In my experience it is advisable to wire an xlr cable with one end wired to all three pins and the other wired to only pin 2 and 3, pin 1 being the earth connection the reason for this is some equipment will setup a hum on the earth wire.
