What's a receiver and an amplifier?

Hi guys. I'm practically new to the home theatre game, so bear with my rather simplistic questions. First in line, what is the difference between an amplifier and a receiver? Which is the most important component in setting up a home theatre system? Is it possible to have just one of them, and if so, which one?
