Hi Nash,
A home theater receiver typically contains the following:
1. AM/FM Tuner
2. Pre-Amp (takes signal from DVD, CD, Tape etc-->amplifies and sends to the amplifier)
3. Surround sound decoder
4. Amplifier
A straight amplifier is just that....an amplifier to be used with a seperate receiver/surround sound decoder etc....the amplifier takes the low-level signal from the pre-amp, amplifies and then sends the power to the speakers.
I tried to keep the answer fairly straight forward...I hope it helps.
Regards,
Shane
