Check out the Cakewalk line of software. It's prety easy to get started with, and they sell a large line of differently priced stuff, ranging from the price of a video game all the way up to $500.00 . I think their home studio version or whatever is like $50.
The good thing about cakewalk is that lots of people use their products, and they work with just about any computer setup.
