The 788 is a stand-alone recorder. It's not going to magically make your recordings sound good. There's nothing wrong with the sound quality of Sonar. If your recording quality isn't good, chances are it's your sound card, or the way you're recording to it.
If you want to upgrade your recording system, the first thing you need to decide is, what are you trying to accomplish? If you just want your home recorded stuff to sound better, but aren't doing any band recording stuff, there's no need for a standalone recorder like the 788, if you already have a good DAW software like Sonar.
What aren't you happy about with your current setup? If you answer that, it'll be easier to help you figure out what to do to improve it.
