These sorts of problems are for TASCAM technical support. This is obviously a system problem, and not a mistake on your part.

Steps:

1: Check the manual troubleshooting sections for this problem (if you don't have the manual, go to www.tascam.com -they have just about every manual available for download)

2: check the tascam website for troubleshooting FAQ's and support.

3: If all else fails, do it the old fashioned way! Call them! You paid for your 788, Don't be afraid to demand that it works!

For anyone else who reads this post: I've read a lot of posted questions that go like this: "i've used my product X for Y amount of time, and now all of a sudden it doesn't work!" This means you have a _problem_! If you're doing what you've always done, and now it doesn't work, something is messed up. Go to the people who made your product. They know best how to get it working again. You might be surprised how willing they are to help you get it working again. They know that if you're a happy customer, you'll buy your next product from them instead of their customer.

One last thought: If you have stuff on your DAW's HD and you can't access it because of the problem, UNPLUG YOUR MACHINE AND LEAVE IT ALONE UNTIL YOU HAVE A SOLUTION!!! The last thing you want to do is lose what you have on there already.
