Pro Tools is software, but Digidesign makes a bunch of hardware to go with it. Basically, you need both to take full advantage of Pro Tools, but you don't need the hardware to use the software.
As for the other posts:
Logic and Cubase are both good choices, but from my experience, not the most user-friendly. I know from personal experience that Cubase is _not_ very intuitive to use, although I don't have much experience with Logic. One thing to keep in mind is that people usually pick one they like, and swear by it. Check features and price. Which ever once you choose, you'll learn how to use it eventually :)
