yep sony dvd players are renowned for failing to read disc's after extended use,i have a sony dvp-s536d which started to have problems reading dvd'
(400+hrs viewing time, failure seems to occur after 200hrs)
ie c13:00 errors and also skipping (happened on movies with no surface damage as well!)

since i followed this all problems have disappeared but i wont buy sony again i know that!
