Is the VCR obsolete?

I am at my wits end trying to figure this out - is there any way to watch a TV show and tape another on a different channel with a VCR anymore? With today's digital cable & sattelite TV, I don't seem to be able to turn on the VCR and program the channels like you could with standard cable (run cable from wall/box through VCR and then to TV).

I have DishNetwork and have a box on each of my TVs. I can hook up my VCR so I can "watch a video", but when I try to hit the "Video On" button on my VCR, I lose control of the dish channels. It was the same way with my digital cable before this.

So I ask, are VCR's now only a one-trick pony?
