Emails have been (and continue to be) sent to Ebay members instructing them to update their personal information by clicking on a link in the email. The link actually routes to the hackers database and records the entered user name and password. Once the data is submitted, the hacker uses the account login parmeters to log into the member's account to list one or more fake auctions. Within each listing is text similar to the following:

"This items can be yours only for 700 usd. For more informations please contact me at:

hijacker@yahoo.com"

Never, I repeat never contact the email address listed in the ebay auction listing. In fact, even if you choose to contact the member through the link "Contact Member" within the listing, there is a chance the hacker will intercept the email by checking the hacked account. DO NOT BID ON SUCH AN ITEM!!

These fake auctions typically have 24 hour durations.

Until Ebay requires all of their users to update their passwords, this problem will continue to be prevalent.

UPDATE 11/15/2005:  Just for fun I offered the scammer $50.00US for a pair of Theta monoblock amplifiers.  This was the response I received:

"You will have to go in person at a
western union office with the amount. There you will have to fill up a form
in which you will have to write:
- your name and address
- the amount
- my info which is: First name: Nicolau
                    Last name: Marcel Marius
                    Address: str. Carpati nr 1A
                    City: Braila
                    ZIP: 6100
                    Country: ROMANIA
After sending the money you will receive a MTCN (Money transfer control
number). I will need this number and also the senders name to check on
www.westernunion.com.
Remember to send the money as to a friend to avoid paying extra taxes
as I will also ship you the item as a gift to do the same thing.
As soon as I see that the money are sent I will call the UPS office and
give them the green light on sending the item. As I know, after they
ship they will send you an official e-mail which will include the full
shipping info (tracking number and when delivery is expected to be made).
I will ask you to write me back right after you receive this e-mail so
I know the deal is closed.
Waiting for your reply right now."
